Review of Our Visit to the Tellus Northwest Georgia Science Museum

February 1, 2009 By kelly 1 Comment

On Saturday, January 31, Mickey and I took the girls to the new planetarium show that started at 10:15am called “Oasis in Space”, so we decided to do that first. We were the first to arrive at the planetarium and were told that the best seats are in the back center, so those are the ones we got for the show. Mickey and I found the show to be interesting. The only aspect that both of us had a hesitation about was that the creation of the planets, etc. was told as a scientific event rather than being created by God. (God was omitted, in other words.) The show itself was interesting and gave details about each planet with some beautiful graphics. However, this was not something that either of the girls really enjoyed. They are five and two years old and this simply did not hold their attention. They both enjoyed seeing the stars and planets, but the dialogue was a little boring for them. In retrospect, we could have skipped the planetarium with the girls. I will say that it was informative and educational. I think that older children and adults would appreciate it more.

After the planetarium show, we ventured over to the area known as Collins Family Big Back Yard. In this area we got to see biospheres with magnifying glasses which was really neat. There were also areas to learn more about reflections, magnetism, sound waves, vibrations, weather, electrical circuits and more. This was such a fun interactive area for families. Macey’s (age 5) favorite area was the “inside” of a tree where she could change the “weather” which would be projected onto the ceiling and the sounds played on the sound system. Mariana (age two) most enjoyed the magnet area.

After the big back yard area, we got to go into another area to pan for gems and then dig for fossils. This was SUCH a hit with the girls. In the first area, they got to pan for gems. Water flows through wooden troughs filled with sand where small gems are hidden. Both girls really enjoyed panning for gems and thought it was very cool that they got to keep as many as they wanted. We have several little pieces of gems for each of them. Just beyond the panning area is an area to dig for fossils. Again, this was a huge hit with the girls. Paint brushes are provided and the girls got to dig through chips (I’m assuming these are made of recycled rubber, but I’m not certain) that look like sand. Each girl got to locate and keep one small fossil each. They each found a shark’s tooth which they found to be very cool. After finding the one fossil each that they wanted to keep, they went to the “big dig” area where they got to uncover “dinosaur” bones. There were several older kids in the big dig area at the same time as our girls, but there was room for everyone at that point. It wasn’t crowded and everyone seemed to have a blast! Our girls certainly enjoyed it.

After the panning and digging, our girls had worked up an appetite, so we decided to give the Museum’s cafe a try. The menu selections are a bit limited, but have a pretty good variety nonetheless. Kids meal packs are offered and include a drink plus gummy fruit snacks. The prices are a tad on the high side, but given the convenience of having lunch on-site, it wasn’t terrible. I ordered a tuna salad sandwich on a kaiser roll. I was very pleased with my selection. The kaiser roll was fresh and soft. The tuna salad tasted very much homemade. I enjoyed my lunch as did Mickey and the girls. Mickey got a cheeseburger which he said was pretty good. (He is a cheeseburger-a-holic, so it takes a LOT to get him to really rave over a cheeseburger) $29 was a touch steep for us for lunch, but everything tasted good and we were happy to have the option to eat there rather than leaving before we were done seeing everything within the Museum.

After lunch we went to the Fossil Gallery. This was a very interesting area for all of us. The girls, especially Macey, were captivated by learning about the dinosaurs. Macey was amazed to see the T-Rex as well as the mammoth. The underwater section was really amazing as well.

Next we went through Science in Motion where we got to see various forms of transportation including a helicopter, airplane cockpit, cars, motorized bikes and more. The girls also got to get their picture taken in a space suit.

Finally, we toured The Weinman Mineral Gallery which is a HUGE exhibit of various minerals from around the world. One thing I found particularly interesting was the periodic table with items within glass enclosures to represent most of the elements. We also loved seeing the huge geodes and the amethysts in particular. There is one area sort of tucked in a hall along the back where phosphorescence was explained and we all really enjoyed that short feature. Another great exhibit!

We really enjoyed our visit to the Tellus Northwest Georgia Science Museum. It was a fascinating, educational and fun place for our whole family to go to learn and enjoy ourselves. I would recommend it for other families or for individuals without a moment’s hesitation. This is not just a place for children, but fortunately it IS a place where they are welcome and there are things for them too. I give Tellus a solid A+!!

Happy Friday!

January 30, 2009 By kelly Leave a Comment

Good morning (it’s morning as I am typing this, obviously) and HAPPY FRIDAY!!

This morning is going to be a busy one for me, but I always like being busy because that keeps me from being bored. Being busy is good.  After I drop Mariana off at preschool, I need to go by the public library to return some books and hopefully check out a few more. Then I’ll scurry by Walmart for a few groceries and then put them up at home. I’m having lunch with Macey at her school today and then checking her out early to go pick up Mariana from preschool. All this week, Macey’s school has let out two hours early for “conference week”, so I’ll only be checking her out about a half hour early – no big deal. She’s excited that I’m coming for a lunch date and, of course, that makes my heart happy. I love that she’s still at an age where she WANTS me around. I hope that doesn’t change. Not sure what our afternoon will bring, but it’s sure to be fun.

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Blessings,

Kelly

A Random Post…

January 29, 2009 By kelly 4 Comments

I couldn’t think of much to post on today, so I am drawing from a “meme” that was recently passed around Facebook. These are 25 random things about me in random order, of course.

1. In general, I am admittedly not very good at keeping up with housework. However, one “chore” I actually like is ironing clothes.  I am known to iron all of our things including the girls’ clothes. I just like the way ironed clothes look

2. I really REALLY like coffee. A lot. I like mine with Splenda and skim milk. Sometimes I buy flavored creamers and that’s a nice treat. Coffee = GOOD!!

3. As long as I can remember, I have been an avid reader.  I always loved standardized test weeks at school because that meant I could bring books with me and have a chance to read during the day. Love reading!

4. I read the first “Twilight” book and found that I was pretty ambivalent about it. I don’t get the hype.  It’s just not for me.

5. I love to listen to “Car Talk” on Public Radio. I only listen to it maybe three or four times a year, but that is one great show.

6. I have a deficiency when it comes to keeping up with socks, especially the girls’ socks. I am known to keep “sock boxes” that my sweet mother-in-law goes through and matches up for us when she visits. I don’t know why, but matching up socks and keeping them together is not something I do well.

7. I almost never know exactly where my cell phone is unless I am out of the house. Around the house, I just use the land-line, so I don’t really NEED to know where my cell is.

8. I recently stopped biting my fingernails after 30+ years of biting them. I hope I can keep this up. Nail biting is gross.

9. I have such a deep hope that my girls will always be close to one another. They are so blessed to have each other and I pray they will always value that. I know they will have their “moments”, but I really hope that more than anything they always appreciate their blessings in each other.

10. Teaching preschool is one of the most fun jobs I have ever done. Right now I just fill-in as a sub on occasion, but it’s so much fun.

11. I played clarinet from 6th until 12th grade. I put it down after I graduated high school and I really wish I hadn’t. I sometimes consider buying one to see if I could reteach myself to play.

12. I really want to be a runner. I have never built up endurance for running because I give up pretty easily due to my lungs feeling like they were going to pop. But, if I could just stick with it, I bet I would like it.

13. Sometimes I like to dress the girls in matching outfits. It’s not a regular occurrence, but it IS fun and adorable. They like it too.

14. After Mickey and I got married, it took me almost a year go get to the Social Security office to officially change my name. We were living in AL at that time, so the lines weren’t as long as they were in metro Atlanta. I kept my middle and maiden names and added our last name to the end of my name.

15. I am so grateful that our God is a gracious God. I have made some mistakes that I never want to think about again, let alone mention, and He loves me enough to forgive me. Without that grace, I’d be sunk.

16. Speaking of mistakes, I’m glad I could learn from the ones I made. I believe that even though sometimes the paths I chose in life were not the best ones, ultimately they got me where I am today and I am grateful for THAT.

17. I rarely ride roller coasters. It’s not because I’m afraid of speed (I’m not) or going upside down (again, I’m not), it’s that I cannot stand that feeling my stomach gets when going downhill quickly. That almost nauseated feeling. Not good.

18. Lately I have been feeling REALLY nostalgic about how quickly the girls are growing up. I always heard that time goes faster when you have kids and that is SO true. I look at them and cannot believe how they grow and change right before our eyes. We’re so blessed to have them!

19. Before Mickey and I even said our first “I love you”, I was pretty sure he was “the one” because he had all the virtues and character I had always dreamed of in a husband. I really didn’t know that kind of man was out there, but he was. Praise God!

20. I am SUCH a pack rat. I have trouble getting rid of stuff, especially kids clothing. I really need someone to come in and overhaul our house because someone with no emotional attachment could get rid of more stuff than I ever could.

21. I maintained an online journal for about seven years. Only recently decided to give that up and it was not an easy decision to make. I just felt like it was consuming too much of my time and I know I need to prioritize my time better.

22. I found out recently that I can still touch my toes. Barely, but I can do it. I think I need to get into Yoga (maybe via Wii Fit) to maintain and increase my flexibility while I still have some left.

23. I would get my hair “done” every day of my life if I could. I love having my hair dried, brushed and styled by someone else. It feels great & it always looks better when the pros do it.

24. I used to keep up with all the current music, across the genres. Well, these days, I couldn’t possibly name even ONE song on top-40.  I know new Contemporary Christian songs, but otherwise stick to classic rock, 80s/90s rock and country.

25. I am blessed beyond belief. Truly truly.

Book Review – Like Dandelion Dust by Karen Kingsbury

2968X: Like Dandelion Dust Like Dandelion Dust

By Karen Kingsbury / Center Street

In a quiet Florida town, life is idyllic for Jack and Molly Campbell and their 4-year-old son, Joey. But one day a phone call shatters their peace. A social worker reports that Joey’s biological father, newly released from prison, wants his son back. Can Jack devise a plan to circumvent a judge’s devastating decision? 256 pages, softcover from Warner Faith.

********

This book was one of two that I checked out from our local library last week. I just started it on Sunday and I could hardly put it down after a couple of chapters. This is a book that captivated my heart and emotions. It’s a family drama that reveals so much about having faith. Specifically it shows just how strong the faith of a child can be.  A great read. I highly recommend it!

Keep Nurses in Georgia Schools!

January 27, 2009 By kelly Leave a Comment

From the Georgia Association of School Nurses:

In 2000 the Governor at that time (Barnes) appropriated $30 million of the Tobacco Settlement funds toward School Nurse Salaries. In 2004 that money was moved to the Department of Community Health to be used to draw down federal match funds to support the Indigent Care Trust funding for hospitals and then it was returned to the Department of Education to continue funding some School Nursing positions. In 2006 Governor Perdue moved that funding to the Department of Education budget as a line item where it reportedly would be more “safe” from reallocation for other agencies.

In the Governors 2010 Budget proposal, this line item is completely eliminated. This $30 million is only a small portion of what is required to staff nurses in all schools. The counties who do staff nurses in all schools are doing so for the most part with local funds (received from the Ad Valorem taxes). Some systems also participate in the Medicaid reimbursement for some approved R.N. provided services, grants and various other limited sources.

As a parent with one child in Georgia public school and another one coming up to public school in a few years, I find this to be an outrage.  Removing nurses from schools is of detriment to our schools.  Nurses do so much and are of so much value to schools. Removing them is not only causing a loss of jobs, but is also potentially putting students in jeopardy. Any cuts to funding for schools is cause for alarm. So, please, if you live in Georgia, sign this petition to let our Legislators know that we do not support this decision. Please also email Governor Perdue and your local representatives. If we take action, maybe we can put a stop to this before it causes any harm to Georgia’s schools and children.
