Approaching Summer

April 29, 2013 By kelly Leave a Comment

I can’t believe I haven’t posted on this blog since January.  I’ve had posting intentions, but, well, we all know how those intentions sometimes go and now here I am several months later. So, I’ll just go with the “better late than never” mantra for the blog for now.

We are on the approach to summer break and I am so looking forward to it. The girls’ last day of school is Thursday, May 23.  After today, we have three more Mondays and the last few half-days of school before the big break. It is surreal to think that our sweet girls are finishing up fourth and first grades. It almost seems like the first day of school was just last week. But, here we are nearing the end of another great school year and I already have summer fever. Yes, I’m the mom and I don’t work full-time at the school, but I am READY for summer.  Why, you ask? Well, let me tell you.

  • Summer break means a break from the normal routine. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m a girl that loves structure and routine most of the time. We get lots of that during the school year. So, during the summer, it’s nice to turn off the alarm clocks and ease up the early bedtimes. I’m sure that by sometime in July, I’ll get the itch to reinstate routine, but I plan to savor many non-structured moments right up until then.
  • Summer brings pool time, random adventures, Vacation Bible School and camps. Such great memories are waiting to be made during the summer. I still recall awesome times that I had as a kid playing and hanging out with friends, going to VBS and, of course, at camps.
  • Summer brings vacation time. Now, I know that vacations aren’t limited to summer, but since we have a beach trip in the making for this summer, we have a lot of reason to look forward to a fun summer vacation.
  • Summer clothes are cuter. I am SO not a cold weather girl. I wear sweaters when it’s cold, but only out of necessity. I try hard not to wear coats as I really don’t like them. Boots and scarves are the only winter accessories I can really get on board with, honestly. So, when it starts getting warmer, I’m a happy lady. I love flip-flops, cute sleeveless tops, sundresses — summer attire is the best! (Let’s not talk about bathing suits though – I don’t know if that will ever fit into my “happy place” frame of mind.)
  • Summer means farmers markets are bustling. I grew up in the country and came up eating fresh fruits and vegetables. I don’t have a garden these days, but I still love fresh produce the best.

See, there is a lot to love about summer. Sure, it’ll be hot, but that’s okay by me. I agree with what I was told once – hot is uncomfortable, but cold hurts. I’m good with hot weather. If it gets too hot, stay inside or hit the pool. Give me summer over winter any day. Ahhhhhhhh…come on, summer!

Five for Thirteen

January 4, 2013 By kelly 1 Comment

It’s been almost a week since I posted. I haven’t meant to be neglectful of the blog. I’ve just been spending time with family and friends and staying a bit busy. I’ve also been rather introspective lately, to say the least. But, I do hope everyone’s year is off to a nice start. As I said on FB on the first day of this year year, if I learned anything at all in 2012, it was to embrace the good times, share the burden of hard times and love all the time. May 2013 be kind to us all. I am thankful for my wonderful family and friends and pray God be near us all.

Rather than make resolutions, I’ve decided to set five goals for myself for this year. In random order, they are:

  • Get better about laundry upkeep. I am seriously the world’s worst when it comes to laundry. For one, I get behind on washing and drying clothes, so then once I get started on that, at long last, I get behind on sorting/folding/ironing/putting away and, well, one set of piles leads to another. In recent weeks, I have made an effort to do better and it’s been working. So, I’d like to keep that up and keep a handle on our laundry.
  • Keep a prayer journal. Admittedly, I am not super keen on sitting and writing in a journal even though it sounds like a very cool thing to do and to have for keepsakes. I know that’s not going to happen. However, I can and should write in a prayer journal regularly. I can jot down people and things I’m praying for and Scriptures to go with them when they are on my heart. That is doable.
  • Take a family adventure trip. We love family vacations and enjoy traveling, so this year I’d like to see us take the girls to some place totally new, at least once.
  • Get into a manageable and effective fitness routine. I was working out regularly and even enjoying it last year, but then I injured my back and was out of commission for awhile as far as any type of exercise. Now that I’m feeling better, I want to find an exercise routine that I can manage that will give me good results too.
  • More date nights. Mickey and I enjoy our date nights, so I’d like to see us get more of those this year. Even carving out time once a month would be good.

I set 12 goals last year and, honestly, I didn’t meet all of them, but I’m not beating myself up about it either. Some things from last year that I’d like to see continue this year are:

  • Keep nice nails. I broke a 30+ year habit and did not bite my nails all of last year. And, they are still in great shape!! YAY!!
  • Family thankful time. Each evening at dinner, before Mickey says the blessing, we each talk about what we are thankful for about that day. I love that time and the reminder that even in the roughest of times, we can find something to be thankful for every day.
  • Keep up this blog. This poor blog grew virtual cobwebs most of the year, but I’ve been good about posting the last couple of months. Even if I only post once a week, something is better than nothing and I’d like to keep it up better.

So, those are my goals for this year. I think they are reasonable and attainable, so hopefully when I look back on them in about a year, I’ll be happy at what has been accomplished.

Here’s to the hope of a blessed year year…

Rainy Day Monday

December 10, 2012 By kelly Leave a Comment

When I typed the title for this blog post, I thought of those old song lyrics by The Carpenters that rainy days and Mondays always get me down. I have to say, that’s really not the case for me. Mostly. Today, it’s definitely not the case. We are getting some much needed rain today and although I wish I had planned grocery shopping better, I can’t complain about the rain itself. We need it, so…let it rain. And, I’ll hit the grocery store another day.

I was actually out shopping today when the downpour started, so THAT little tidbit wasn’t awesome, but at least I got a cute new polka-dotted umbrella out of the deal. I won’t even talk about how much more shopping I did while waiting for the heavy rain to pass. Let’s just say, impulse purchases will look super cute in Christmas paper under the tree for the girls.

I tend to like rainy days. I like having the windows open at home when the rain is falling gently, so that we can hear the rain. That is seriously soothing. Rainy days are good take a nap days, or, at the very least, throw on some comfy clothes and pile up under blankets and veg days. And, rainy evenings are great for comfort suppers like chili or chicken & dumplings or, what we are having tonight, breakfast for dinner. Something about gray days inspires comfort food cravings, doesn’t it? So, I think it’s great indulge those once in awhile.

To me, rainy days are good reminders of several things. One, that we NEED rain – it’s a very basic need to everything, really. Two, rainy days have a way of making us slow down even in the most busy of times. And, three, rainy days can remind us to be grateful in all situations because if you listen, you’ll hear birds singing in the rain and, hey, if they can sing while getting rained on, I can find something to be happy about on a rainy day. So, I’m taking opportunities on this rainy day to slow down, get comfy and relax. Ahhh!

Rainy or not, I hope you all have a great Monday.

Blessings,
Kelly

Christmas Cards

December 5, 2012 By kelly 5 Comments

It’s Christmas card time again and, I just have to be honest, it’s my favorite mail time of the whole year. I just love getting mail and what is better than seeing sweet Christmas cards in the mailbox on a daily basis? It is all I can do not to run down to the mailbox as soon as I hear the mail truck up the street. If you ask Mickey, he’ll say I’m that way on a normal day, but when you add Christmas cards to the mix – I’m practically a mail carrier stalker. I adore getting mail and I just love Christmas cards.

Every year, we send Christmas cards to family and friends. (If you haven’t received one and want to, please message me. I love sending them as much as receiving them.) Invariably, every year I stress over which cards to pick and use. Do I go with one photo, two, MORE? Just the girls or the whole family? Stick to red and green colors or branch out into something else? Where will I order from this year? How many? Stamps are HOW MUCH now? There are many decisions to be made and, honest to goodness, sometimes I have to remind myself that this is fun and shouldn’t be a stress. When I adjust my focus on this being fun and a wonderful tradition, I always get into the spirit when I create, order and send the cards. It’s just that those first decisions are daunting even though they shouldn’t be.

This year I went with three separate card designs. Yes, I know…I took the express train to crazy town on that one. It came down to me liking three very cute designs, getting a really good price (thank you, Walgreens Photo!) and having a ton of cards to order. When in doubt, get them all. Am I right? I’m going with a yes on that one. So, anyway, I ordered three sets of cards and picked them all up in one afternoon.  This was all the last week of November. Somehow, everything aligned just right for me to actually be ahead of the game. Shock! I worked for two days (in my spare time) addressing and stamping the envelopes. The out of state cards were mailed on November 29 and the in-state and in-town cards were mailed on the 30. I was a woman on a mission  to get those cards outta here and into other mailboxes. Guess what? Only one came back returned for postage. The one to Mickey’s parents. D’oh!! But, at least they could find the humor in it. 😉 Pretty much as soon as our cards were mailed, others started hitting our mailbox. Oh, happy day!!

All this rambling to say that I am super happy that it’s Christmas card season. It’s only December 5 and we have already received some really great cards. I look forward to collecting them throughout the season. And, then, I look forward to saving all the photos that are sent. Last year, I started something cool with our Christmas card photos. I cut out each photo and put magnetic tape on the back. The stairwell leading to the basement has magnetic paint on one wall, so I arranged the photos in a collage on that wall. We walk past those photos several times per day and it’s always nice to see the faces of friends and family. So, I’ll be adding this year’s photos to the collection and every day that I see the photos I’ll be reminded to be thankful for the precious blessing of loved ones near and far.

Blessings,
Kelly

11 Random Things About Me

February 15, 2012 By kelly 4 Comments

My sweet friend Cheryl who blogs over at Live Fit Daily must have known that I needed a big kick in the blogging booty because she just tagged me in a really cool past that encouraged me to participate and post also.

The following is the lowdown on this post. Thanks, Cheryl, for the tag which really was a good encouragement for me.

Post these rules:

  • You must post 11 random things about yourself.
  • Answer the questions set for you in their post.
  • Create 11 new questions for the people you tag to answer.
  • Go to their blog and tell them that you’ve tagged them.
  • No stuff in the tagging section about “you are tagged if you are reading this”. You legitimately have to tag 11 people.

11 Random Things (that you may or may not know) About Me:

  1. When I use eggs from the carton, I have to situate the remaining eggs so that they “balance” in the carton. It drives me crazy when eggs are all messed up in the carton.
  2. I have a preference for even numbers. I don’t know why, but I do. Go back to the egg thing — an  uneven number of eggs in the carton makes ‘balancing” it difficult. Even numbers are just more friendly. Or, that’s my theory, anyway. 🙂
  3. I am a born and raised country girl and I am proud of that. My grandparents live on 50 acres and many of my fondest memories involve being outside on their land. Riding our horse, learning to swim in their pond, rambling all over the place on ATVs and more. Country living definitely has its appeal and has a place in my heart forever.
  4. I can pinch with my toes. If you don’t believe me, ask Mickey.
  5. I moved to the ATL area by myself in 1998 with very little cash on hand and no savings account to back me up. I made it. I had help along the way from awesome family, friends and employers and I MADE IT.
  6. I have to sleep under covers – even if it’s hot. I like my covers piled on and I prefer the room to be cool so that I can be snuggly warm underneath them.
  7. I get teary any time I see my girls in a school activity or performance. When I see them day to day at school, I’m fine, but let them get some kind of award or have a performance and the knot in my throat is crazy big.
  8. I have never figured out how to make a proper omelet. I want to know how, but I cannot get it, for the live of me.
  9. I laugh like a hyena at any commercial, video or show with animal humor. The AFLAC duck still slays me.
  10. I read all three books of the Hunger Games triology and I don’t get all the fuss. It was well written, but the subject matter is crazy dark and I just don’t get the mass appeal. (No one throw rocks at me.)
  11. I am late starting dinner because I have been working on this post. LOL!

My questions from Cheryl:

  • If you could only eat one food in life, what would it be? Are you kidding me?! Yikes. I guess I would have to say pizza because I could at least vary toppings, maybe? That’s a hard one.
  • If you could pick, what town would you live in? Love the area we are in, actually. Don’t want to move from this area. But, if we moved somewhere big, I’d probably pick San Diego for the climate.
  • Salty or sweet?  Another difficult one. I like a good combo of the two – my favorite movie theater snack is popcorn and Goobers. Mostly, I choose sweet, but there are times when I just “need” some good old salty chips.
  • What is your current favorite blog or website? Facebook is the one I’m on the most.
  • Do you like your pictures in black and white or color? While I do like black/white photos, I prefer color because that is how the photographed moment happened. I also prefer very minimal or no editing at all. I like photos that are natural.
  • What is your favorite way to exercise? Lifting weights, actually. I love knowing I’m getting stronger and building muscle that burns calories. Favorite group class is ZUMBA!
  • The Today Show or Good Morning America? Used to be Today Show, but now it’s GMA, if anything.
  • When it’s all over, what you like most to be known for? I want people to see my faith in God and my love for my family and friends above all else.
  • Name a concert that you have always wanted to be on the front row for. Well, we’ve been front row a couple of times. I’d LOVE to be front row when Garth Brooks goes back out on tour in a few years.
  • How many hours of sleep is perfect for you? 9-10, no joke.
  • What is one thing you could never give up or live without? (besides your family) I think that faith and friends also fall under “given”, so I’m going with music. I just love music. It inspires me. So, that’s my choice.

My questions for you…

  1. If you drink coffee, what do you take in it? And, if you don’t drink coffee, WHY NOT?!
  2. What was your first automobile?
  3. If you could win any all-expense paid vacation to take next week, where would you go?
  4. What is the last movie you saw?
  5. If you had to choose ONE of these, would you live in a place where it’s always winter (cold!) or always summer (hot!)?
  6. What is the first word that comes to mind when asked to describe yourself?
  7. What is your favorite song right now?
  8. If you won a big sum of money, what is one charity that you would donate to immediately?
  9. Which flavor of Girl Scout Cookies do you prefer?
  10. Recommend a book to me.
  11. Paper or plastic?
